Continuing to pray for vocations

What a joyous day Feb. 20 was as Bishop James Misko was ordained and installed as the bishop of Tucson! I think I can speak for the entire diocesan staff as we congratulate Bishop Misko and the people of Tucson.

As I sat in St. Augustine Cathedral and watched Archbishop Joe Vásquez and then Bishop Daniel Garcia place their hands upon the new bishop’s head in prayer, my heart burst with joy, and I thought of all of the men who have gone before.

This is not the first time one of Austin’s priests has been made bishop. During my tenure at the Diocese of Austin (29 years next month), I have seen seven men from our presbyterate named bishops of other dioceses. Someone even asked me recently if the Diocese of Austin has had more priests named bishops than any other diocese. I honestly don’t know!

What I do know is that our diocese is blessed with good and holy priests. Please join me in praying for our priests and all vocations on April 25 at 9 a.m. at St. Helen Parish in Georgetown. Details are available at austinvocations.com.
