Come Holy Spirit

The National Eucharistic Congress was an unforgettable experience. One of the most moving parts for me was the very first night when the lights dimmed and Jesus was brought into Lucas Oil Stadium in the most beautiful monstrance I have ever seen. Maybe it was a combination of the lighting and the fog machines, but it felt like the Holy Spirit literally filled the atmosphere of the stadium. Yes, that is a line from the song Holy Spirit You Are Welcome Here, but those opening moments of the Congress were incredibly moving and powerful.

As we knelt in adoration of Jesus, I thanked God for the opportunity to participate in such a wonderful experience. And for days (probably more like weeks) afterward, my heart was singing, “Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere. Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for, to be overcome by your presence, Lord.”

This issue of the Catholic Spirit includes several pieces about the Congress, including one young Austinite’s experience. I also encourage everyone to go to YouTube (search: National Eucharistic Congress 2024) and watch the segments from Father Mike Schmitz to Sister Josephine Garrett to Jonathan Roumie to Bishop Robert Barron and many other fantastic presenters, as well as the Masses (the homilies were very good).

May the Holy Spirit continue to renew our church and may our hearts be overcome by the glory of God.
