Bishop Joe Vásquez opened the Year of Jubilee Dec. 29 at St. Mary Cathedral in Austin. The theme for this year is Pilgrims of Hope, which Bishop Vásquez addressed in his homily.
“Hope is based on something eternal. Hope is based on God. I am made in God's image and likeness, and he has destined me and you to be with him for all eternity. That's the plan that God has for each one of us. Hope is a gift from God that I cannot give myself, for only God can give that to me. Hope tells us that we are called to believe in God and to be assured that God cares about me, so much so that my life is in his hands. For us Christians, hope is not something; it is about a person. That person is Jesus Christ. He is our hope. He came to save us by his birth, death and resurrection. He gives us hope unending,” he said.
