August is national Make-A-Will Month
Each August, National Make-A-Will Month reminds us of one of the most important steps in planning for the future — creating a will. No matter where we are in the journey of life, it’s never too early to start planning.
Each August, National Make-A-Will Month reminds us of one of the most important steps in planning for the future — creating a will. No matter where we are in the journey of life, it’s never too early to start planning.
Why a will matters
A will is a legal document that outlines how we want our assets distributed after our lifetime. It can also name guardians for minor children, support the charities or causes that are important to us, and designate an executor to carry out our wishes. Without a will, state laws decide these matters, which may not align with our wishes.
Creating a will is also an act of Christian stewardship because it relieves our family of the guesswork and hard decisions they might otherwise have to make during an already difficult time, and it gives us the opportunity to give thanks to God for all the gifts he has bestowed upon us.
It’s not complicated
Many people put off writing a will because they think it's complicated or expensive. In reality, making a will can be straightforward. Our diocese has partnered with FreeWill so that anyone can create a will for free during National Make-a-Will Month. This resource allows us to plan for the future while providing peace of mind for us and those we care about. Create or update your will by visiting freewill.com/austindiocese. Those who have a more complex estate should consider consulting an estate planning attorney. Visit the Professional Advisors Network information at austindiocese.org/professional-advisors-network for a list of estate planning attorneys in the Diocese of Austin.
Create a legacy
National Make-A-Will Month is also a perfect time to consider the legacy we want to create after we die. Our loved ones are the first people to consider when creating a will. Then, we must think about the charities or causes that are special to us or that have served us well — like the Diocese of Austin, a parish, a Catholic school, or a favorite ministry. Naming the Diocese of Austin or a Catholic ministry in a will can make a big impact and help the church continue the mission of Christ for years to come and inspire others to do as well.
Start today
This August, commit to starting — or updating — your will. It's a powerful way to plan for the future, care for your loved ones and make a lasting impact.
