Former bishops of the Diocese of Austin

 


 

Bishop Louis J. Reicher,

 

1947-1971

The Diocese of Austin was formed in 1947 with Bishop Louis J. Reicher as its first bishop. Upon his retirement in 1971 due to ill health, the diocese had 85 parishes and 31 missions.


 

Bishop Vincent M. Harris,

 

1971-1986

When Bishop Vincent M. Harris became bishop in 1971, the diocese was growing. Bishop Harris was responsible for the building of several new parishes. He also spoke out on numerous social issues, including abortion and capital punishment.


 

Bishop John E. McCarthy,

 

1986-2001

During the 15 years Bishop John E. McCarthy led the diocese, there was tremendous growth, not only in the Catholic population but also in expansion of diocesan services, outreach to the general community and the development of several institutions, including the diocesan retreat center, Cedarbrake.


 

Bishop Gregory M. Aymond,

 

2001-2009

Under the leadership of Bishop Aymond, several new Catholic schools were opened, as the population in Central Texas rapidly expanded. Diocesan offices were consolidated into one location at 6225 Hwy. 290 East in Austin. Bishop Aymond was installed as the archbishop of New Orleans in August 2009.


 

Bishop Joe S. Vásquez,

 

2010-2025

On March 8, 2010, Bishop Joe S. Vásquez was installed as the fifth bishop of Austin after serving as the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston since 2002. Under his shepherding, the Catholic population of the diocese grew to roughly 700,000. Bishop Vásquez was installed as archbishop of Galveston-Houston on March 25, 2025.
