Now is a good time to plan for the future

August is recognized as National Make-A-Will Month, offering an important reminder to take a meaningful step in planning for the future. Creating or updating a will is one of the simplest ways to care for your loved ones and ensure your wishes are honored.

A will is more than a legal document. It allows you to decide how your assets will be distributed, name guardians for your dependents and appoint someone you trust to carry out your wishes. Without a will, these decisions are left to state law, which may not reflect your intentions.

Preparing a will is also an act of Christian stewardship. Thoughtful planning gives us the opportunity to show our gratitude to God for all the gifts he blesses us with during our lifetime and to responsibly care for those gifts. Having a plan in place can also ease the burden on family members during a difficult and emotional time.

Many people delay creating a will because they believe the process is complicated or costly. Fortunately, preparing a basic will is often easier than expected. To help individuals and families take this important step, the Diocese of Austin has partnered with FreeWill, an online will planning resource that allows you to create a will at no cost during National Make-A-Will Month. You can create your will or update an existing one by visiting freewill.com/austindiocese.

If your estate is more complex, you may want to work with an estate planning attorney. A list of trusted professionals is available through the Diocese of Austin Professional Advisors Network at austindiocese.org/professional-advisors-network.

As you reflect on your plans for the future, consider the legacy you hope to leave behind. After providing for your loved ones, many faithful Catholics choose to support the ministries and organizations that have shaped their lives and strengthened their faith. Making a charitable gift in your will can help continue the mission of Christ for future generations, whether through the Diocese of Austin, your parish, a Catholic school or your favorite ministry.

This National Make-A-Will Month, take the opportunity to create or update your will and prayerfully consider the impact your legacy can have for years to come and inspire others to follow your example.
